Young Communist targets of anti-democratic action, this time in the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova of Lisboa

On 13 November two militants of the Portuguese Communist Youth found to stimulate a propaganda action statement of the 36 anniversary of the Portuguese Communist Youth in the College of Science and Technology, New University of Lisbon, namely an action political propaganda in a public place.

Faced with this initiative, the communist militants were targeted by abusive and illegal action by the GNR, having been wrongly addressed, searched, handcuffed, arrested and taken to the police station. It is further noted the connivance of the Directorate of FCT / UNL throughout this procedure and also the initiative to call the authority forces to prevent the exercise of a right.

Noted that this is one among many other cases that have taken place with several young people in schools, workplaces and other spaces, in contexts that streamline is propaganda actions, either under the right of assembly, association, organization or event , rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic conquered by the Portuguese people in the struggle for freedom.

The Portuguese Communist Youth condemns all these actions in a clear attack on democratic freedoms and rights, and in particular this action of the forces of authority starting from the Directorate of FCT orders / UNL, more not intend to intimidate and limit the political activity of youth is organized and acts in defense of their rights.

The Portuguese Communist Youth greets the thousands of young people every day, under enormous pressures and blackmail, do not relinquish their rights and exercise them. JCP confirms that it will be every day the values ​​of democracy that have been hard-won in the April Revolution and rejects all anti-democratic actions that violate the rights of youth.

And that’s why, with pride and recognition of youth, the JCP will continue to streamline its action and intervention as it did today, and will continue to fight uncompromisingly for the values ​​of freedom and democracy.

EU fight

Hundreds in defense of the right to study

The Portuguese Communist Youth welcomes students of higher education who resist and fight for their right to a Higher Public Education, Free, Democratic and quality, like as inscribed in the fundamental law, the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

On November 26, students from Porto, Lisbon, Vila Real, Braga, Bragança, Almada, Aveiro, Algarve, Coimbra and Évora, responding to the call of various structures and student associations, organized denunciation actions and protest around issues like the lack of pedagogical conditions the result of shortcomings in the teaching and non-teaching, as well as in infrastructure and other materials; tuition, fees and charges; insufficient and successively delayed scholarships; early school leaving and the thousands who are forced to work or borrow to continue to study.

The many actions and the hundreds of students involved from north to south of the country shows that students do not accept the underfunding situation of the institutions and the political moment that we live in our country requires all the fighting in order to effect a policy change which put an end to the elitism path and commodification of education.

On behalf of the IOC, we reaffirm that we will do everything so that the demands of the students are heard. We committed to continue the struggle of students and we urge that this be intensified in order to ensure, in practice, a change of policies for higher education.
